A conversation about global art practice
Along with several thousand people, I was fortunate enough to squeeze myself into Barton Hall last Friday night for the Stephen Colbert show. Packed into the massive gym like sardines, we all listened attentively hoping for a laugh or two just to brighten up a perhaps more serious subject. Yes, Colbert made some jokes about the sign language lady and social life at Cornell, but part of his show also touched on his more familiar topic: the American government.
Perhaps the most scrutinized part of our nation today, the government by nature is divided into many different personal and political viewpoints. It is the job of those such as Stephen Colbert, John Stewart, Bill Maher, and several others to poke fun of these different view points while in some fashion delivering the news. In his talk, Colbert said that the majority of the people between the ages of 18 and 24 get their news from these shows. He also said that this generation of technology savvy kids has moved from protest on the streets to protest on the web. Rather than voicing their opinions through demonstrations, riots, and marches, today’s youth are using the internet in the form of blogs (such as this one) to voice their opinions on every imaginable topic.
