Globalization and Contemporary Culture

In this unit’s reading, we’ve read about the contemporary arts in the Caribbean.  Particularly in the reading “Visualizing Art in the Caribbean”, the author discusses the influences of European and American cultures on the Natives Caribbean and how internationalism and globalization have shifted the trends of styles among Caribbean artists in the late twenty-century.  In general, artists have been divided into two groups of traditionalists, who preferred local, indigenous themes to represent the natives, and modernists, who preferred more international, multi-ethnic styles to seek connection with the world.  Of course, there are always semi-traditionalists and semi- modernists who seek both the quality of globalization and nationalism to produce distinct, decent artworks.   Do you think that globalization has helped the world to understand each entity of culture better?  Or, do you think that internationalism has destroyed native culture and promoted tension among the traditionalists and modernists?   Or, do you think artists should find a balance between traditionalism and modernism to enrich the quality of art?
